The Ancient of Trees, Hatfield House Park

Claire Miles

Updated: Jan 2, 2023

This image is based on an actual oak tree within the grounds of Hatfield House Park. It is a few hundred years old. It seems to me to rise as a cathedral to nature from the deep red of its hollow, up through its gargoyle-like forms (which feel to me like spirits protecting the tree), to its tiny lime green leaves reaching out to the sky and proclaiming that it is still alive after all these years.

I created it by sketching initially, having come across a photograph taken several years ago which revealed some of the faces which seemed to be talking or singing. I then created enlarged photocopies of photographs which I then translated onto six mark-resist sheets for the six colours. I worked with chinagraph pencil and pen and Indian ink. The image was then photoscreen-printed in six colours before a final reworking with brush using acrylic and medium.

Screenprint.

Created using chinagraph and Indian ink on mark resist sheets which were then copied onto silkscreens.

The tree is a few hundred years old and appeared to me to arise out of primal depths like a cathedral to the natural world, faces emerging like gargoyles to proclaim that it is still alive.
